Commitment from the Pulpit

I was reading an article from the UMC Advocate and saw a quote I thought I’d share.

“It does no good to preach commitment!” declares the theology professor to the seminary students. Over the murmuring and objections that greet his words, one voice rises. “So, what are we supposed to preach then?”

“Preach the greatness of God. If people catch just one tiny glimpse of the greatness of God, they will not be able to help but be committed.”

  1. I believe the Aposlte Paul would agree!!

  2. Yes. Exactly. Perhaps one could say that they will be committed to God by seeing His greatness in His grace, which they will find to be irresistible.

No one is going to commit themselves upon hearing of how they must commit themselves. They must hear of the greatness of the glory and grace of the one to whom they will be committed. Then, they will commit themselves to it.

I’ve never desired to worship God by hearing how I must worship God. I desire to worship God when I taste His goodness in my life and (more importantly perhaps in the life of the Church) when I taste His goodness in the life of others (through sermons, testimony etc.).

  3. Amen! Good reminder Hank.
